Introducing the #StopExplicitDeepfakes Campaign

Explicit deepfakes are a growing digital threat that disproportionately target women and marginalized communities. AI-generated non-consensual explicit deepfakes are being weaponized to harass, blackmail, and silence victims, with little to no legal consequences for perpetrators. As deepfake technology becomes more advanced, the scale of this abuse is escalating—yet laws and platform policies remain insufficient to combat it. We refuse to let AI be used as a tool for harm.

The #StopExplicitDeepfakes campaign is our global initiative to fight back. We are pushing for legislation, corporate accountability, and public awareness to ensure that AI-generated exploitation is recognized and addressed as a serious human rights issue.

Our work focuses on three key areas:

  • Policy Advocacy & Legislative Action – We work with lawmakers to push for stronger legal protections against the creation and spread of explicit deepfakes, ensuring that perpetrators face real consequences.

  • Raising Awareness Through Media & Education – We educate the public, journalists, and policymakers about the harms of explicit deepfakes through workshops, research, and media advocacy.

  • Holding Tech Platforms Accountable – We demand that social media and content-sharing platforms improve their deepfake detection and removal policies to better protect victims.

How We're Taking Action

Girls for Algorithmic Justice is taking a multi-faceted approach to fighting back against explicit deepfakes:

🛑 Advocating for Stronger Laws: We are drafting an open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives on explicit deepfakes to push for bipartisan legislative action.

📢 Raising Public Awareness: We are leading a media campaign to expose the dangers of explicit deepfakes, including writing an op-ed and collaborating with major publications to amplify our message. Additionally, we are meeting with local university and high school leaders to push for policy changes that classify explicit deepfakes as a form of sexual harassment, setting a precedent for other educational institutions to follow.

💻 Empowering Young Advocates: We are developing guidelines for volunteers and students to advocate for policy changes in middle and high school districts, working with Middleton School District and others to introduce AI ethics and digital safety discussions in schools. Our grassroots team is creating a guide for implementing changes in local school policies and engaging with partners to expand these efforts.

✍️ Submitting Global Commentary & Advocacy: We submitted a policy proposal to the UN AI Advisory Body, urging the incorporation of gender-equitable AI legislation into their priorities.

🏛 Lobbying in Washington, D.C.: We are planning an in-person lobbying trip to Washington, D.C. to meet with legislators and advocate for the TAKE IT DOWN Act and DEFIANCE Act.

📚 Hosting Workshops & Trainings: We are collaborating with organizations like Log Off Movement to host a cyberstalking workshop, and a panel with Women in STEM. We are equipping students, educators, and policymakers with the knowledge and tools to recognize, report, and prevent deepfake exploitation.
